The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is charged with the responsibility of formulating, implementing and regulating educational policies and programmes for the State, including overseeing the general administration of the basic and secondary school system in accordance with the goals and needs of the State and in consonance with the National Policy on Education and other relevant policies and programmes such as Education For All and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In a nutshell, it is the responsibility of the Ministry to provide early childhood, primary and secondary and technical education for young people, as well as basic literacy and life-skill education for adult learners who missed the opportunity of getting such education while they were children.
Vision
To provide unfettered access to basic education to all children of pre-primary, primary and post-primary school age for a qualitative, functional and free education that will equip them for purposeful living.
Mission
To ensure the provision of qualitative, functional, free and compulsory education to all children of school age, irrespective of religion, sex, culture and disability, including second-chance adult learners.
Structure
The Ministry is headed by the Honourable Commissioner, with the Permanent Secretary as the accounting officer. Directors head the departments at headquarters in Asaba, and a field office in each of the 25 local government areas carries the Ministry's work to every school.
